Always wash your hands before touching your fresh tattoo!
Your new tattoo has involved breaking the surface of your skin and there is a possibility that, if not cared for properly, your tattoo may become infected.
Remove the bandage after 1-2 hours (unless you have Tatu-Derm applied - for Tatu-Derm aftercare look on the bottom of the page)
Wash the tattoo using your fingertips or hand only.
First wash (1-2 hours after your tattoo is finished) use a hot water (you can use non scented soap like Satin or Dr Bronner’s Magic Soap). Take care to gently wash away all traces of blood (if dried blood is left to dry on the tattoo it can form a scab). Let it air dry.
Apply a thin coat of provided ointment to the tattoo. To ensure you will have good start with your new tattoo I will provide you with non-petrolatum based ointment - it is made of natural ingredients and has no parabens.
Use just enough to make it shine, a little goes a long way...Work it in well. Too much ointment will only suffocate the tattoo and liquefy any scabs that may have formed causing the ink to fall out and look blotchy. If you need to re-bandage a tattoo (for the first night) use a non-sticky pad.
Ointment should be applied whenever the tattoo is feeling stiff or dry. Normally, between three to five times a day for three to five days then you can switch to a fragrance free body lotion (or keep using ointment ). Do not use lotions that contain color or sparkles until the healing is complete. A tattoo will look like its healed after about 2 weeks, but full healing time of the skin takes 6-8 weeks.
Your skin will form a protective layer. If you do not keep it moist, it will form a thick, hard scab that may crack when you move. When this kind of a scab is formed the ink sits within it and slowly heals into the skin. When the tattoo is kept moist it doesn't have a chance to form a scab but does form a thin membrane to protect the tattoo while it heals. This layer peels off very similar to a sunburn (DO NOT PICK AT TATTOO). It is normal to see small flakes of colored skin falling off during this stage of healing.
Keep your tattoo clean, however, long showers or baths must beavoided for 2 weeks. This includes swimming, hot tubs, and saunas.
Please refrain from scratching or picking at the tattoo.
It is normal for the tattoo to become very itchy during the healing time. To relieve this, you may slap it with your hand (this will sting it and take away the itch).
The sun is BAD for your tattoo.
Especially on a new tattoo the sun can cause a lot of problems. Wait until it is fully healed to go back in the sun or a tanning bed and make sure you put on a high quality sunblock. When you tan some colors may not show up as brightly as they could. Over time, excessive exposure to sunlight will cause your tattoo to fade no matter what colors are used.
Don’t over-apply an ointment.
If you apply an ointment too frequently or too much your tissue will turn to mush changing later to the scab. Always wash your tattoo before applying a fresh layer of ointment. If it does form a scab discontinue the ointment or moisturizer. Let the tattoo 'dry heal'. You will have to keep an eye on it and keep any scabs from getting pulled off prematurely.
If you have any problems or questions at any time then you should contact your tattooist – contact details are provided below - to ask their advice in the first instance. It may be the case that they may refer you to your GP, or reassure you that what you are seeing is part of the natural healing process. In an emergency, you should always seek medical attention either at your GP surgery or at a hospital Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department.
Tatu-Derm - if you work in dirty environment this can be great solution for you as it will protects your tattoo allowing it to breathe at the same time. Initial layer shall be removed 12 - 24 hours after application. Then you wash your tattoo with hot water to make sure to remove all traces of ink, blood, let it dry 20 min.
