For small, medium tattoos I will give a flat price - regardless of time. Large work (half sleeve, full back etc) £70 per hour as it is impossible to predict how long will it take. I don't charge for drawings - either freehand or prepared earlier.
Price includes after care product.
Minimum rate is 40 GBP, so if you want something really small it may be good idea to get it along with a bigger piece- then often I do it free of charge or additional 5 - 10 GBP.
It is very hard to give a proper quote over the phone or through FB - I can not price something I can not see. Please avoid questions: "How much for a letter?", "How much for a name?" etc. Every tattoo can be done different ways - more details, more "special effects", it all affects a final price. Placement on the body too.
Cover up will cost more then getting tattoo on "virgin" skin.
Sometimes people raise their eyebrows when they hear how much a tattoo will cost. To help to understand here is what price needs to cover:
All disposable equipment:
needles
tubes (if someone uses metal tubes the cost also covers sterilisation pouches, cleaning solution, autoclave periodical spore tests, inspection visits for checking if operates properly, maintenance of this expensive equipment)
disposable cups
inks (each bottle has expiration date - means if expired - goes to the bin)
ointment
disposable barriers (couch, armrest, clipcord, machines, bottles - any surface which may to contact with body fluids)
disposal of contaminated material (sharps and other) which has to be carried by medical waste company
paper towels
soaps
skin desinfectants
razors
other disposable machine parts
gloves (couple pairs for each procedure)
bandage
disposable pens for drawings
hectograph paper for stencil making
stencil solutions
aftercare solution for client (very often included in a price of tattoo) - I provide my clients with a jar of Bee Wax based aftercare (made in Scotland :)
cleaning solutions (medical grade) - all surfaces to clean after each customer
utilities (we pay higher business rates for electricity and water)
rent
advertisement
licensing
liability insurance
office supplies
(probably few more things I forgot to mention)
and of course:
...time and skills of tattooists....
P.S. Also...tattooists don't have paid sick days, maternity leave and paid vacations.
